On 15 January 2026, Wikipedia celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding in 2001. The English edition has grown to include more than 7 million articles—all written collaboratively by volunteers.

Wikipedia started as an ambitious idea to create a free encyclopedia, written by volunteers, for everyone in the world. It seemed impossible. Over 25 years, Wikipedia has become the largest collection of open knowledge in history. How did it happen? (1 min 30 s)

You'd teach me all sorts of wonderful things—I like to think I taught you something as well. But the lesson I'm most grateful for is your teaching me to be curious.

Wikipedia is probably the first website that I've ever visited.

Since I was able to read, probably around 6 years old, I've spent countless hours, evenings and nights reading Wikipedia's articles.

From the Hominins to the Cold War, from a small hair to a neutron star.

Even tho I occasionally read completely random articles out of curiosity the vast majority of articles that I read in all this years talked about History, something I cannot resist.

Thank you so much Wikipedia for offering almost all the knowledge of the whole World all for free, a big thanks also to all the thousands of editors that offer their time to correct and write more articles, expanding the knowledge that every single human being deserve, all free of charge.

You're Legends and you perfectly know that, your hard work and sacrifice will never be forgotten but loved by the future generations as well as the current ones.

From an Italian 18 years old male, I can't thanks you enough.

Wikipedia is a place where we can explore and read articles deeply, that is based on real bioGraphy and information for over 25 years of creation, since 2001, January 15th. While the rest of the people are watching short-form videos (including reels or YouTube shorts), I, Nas4tb - as a Wikipedian for 3~4 years since joining in 2022, learns and memorises about historical and fictional articles that most 14~15 year old - like me - often watch short videos than long article. While short videos also contains documentary and informative content, both genres are niche compared to what is trending today. My summary is - Wikipedia is one of exciting place to read online far beyond what our teachers teach in textbook. Wikipedia is a place where teachers, students, parents and ever teenagers read together across all cultures, ages and countries (except those who banned) including English Wikipedia, which most textbook ever miss.

Wikipedia also helped me to create a very realistic, practical alternate-history or fictional worlds without falling onto binary framework, exaggeration and character-focused narrative, besides AI that summarises it, but the exceptions are Grok, who use more profanity and offense due to it’s tightly and deeply linked to X (formerly Twitter), including the word What The Fuck.

hello from miraheze!! I rarely actually edit here but I can't not congratulate this site for working the way it does for so long!! it's quite literally the backbone for how information online works and I've cross-referenced here multiple times when structuring other wikis I do edit at!

also coming here to say that the mediawiki wikitext dialect is the best markdown format I've ever worked with—obviously within domain it makes sense—but it just really clicks in my brain to treat everything as if it were in the structure of a wiki. it's as versatile as it is simplistic

Here on the 25th birthday, word is out that you are taking money from the AI companies "for the data scraping they already do." Context aside, it's a terrible look, and donations are going to stop. I couldn't be happier when I heard Wikipedia is embracing the future of AI!! Soon we will able to breathe the word "realistic medieval world" and an AI will be able to comb all the Wikipedia articles and sources related to this topic and generate an entire reconstructed reality of the past and it wouldn't be possible if Wikipedia hadn't thoroughly maintained and built up the knowledge over 25 years, especially the link to (archived) sources so the AI creation tools can simulate an entire reality as realistically as possible while sticking to history and TRUE facts. I grew up hearing teachers say “dont use Wikipedia as a source”. Now, in the days of alternate facts, twitter news, political disinformation and measles, i cant help but think - “you dun goofed”. I’ll never really agree with your stance on what constitutes a good source yourself - your fixation on books - as if the highest selling book of all time doesn't claim women came from the rib of a man. And I won’t always agree on what’s “objective”, on articles about terrible people or ideas. BUT I will always be certain the Wikipedia community is, as a whole, one of the best demographics out there. Unbiased, embracing knowledge, and making progress - no matter who’s “anti woke” sensibilities it offends. You’re a bulwark against the rising tide of first-impression reactivity, dark ages igno-arrogance - from all sides. You are political, because the truth is political.
